  48.   You may have a flow control problem.  Go to the FaxMail Configuration
  49.   and coordinate the Modem-Initialization-String with the Flow-Control.
  50.  
  51.   The Modem-Initialization-String tells the modem what flow control to
  52.   use.  The flow control setting tells Windows what the flow control to
  53.   use.
  54.  
  55.   With most modems except the USRobotics Class 2.0, you will use Rts/Cts.
  56.   With the USRobotics Class 2.0 you must use Xon/Xoff.  When you set the
  57.   flow control, you must also select an Initialization string that
  58.   harmonizes with it.
  59.  
  60.   Load the FaxMail Event Monitor to see what class your modem is running.
  61.   If it is class=2.0, your modem may have been made by USRobotics.  If
  62.   this is the case, select the USRobotics 28.8k class 1,2,2.0 string and
  63.   Xon/Xoff flow control.  If you have a USRobotics that is running
  64.   class 1, use Rts/Cts and the USRobotics 14.4k Choice 1 string.

  66.   Most other modems will use Rts/Cts flow control.

  68.   If you use the Rts/Cts (hardware) flow control, the following will help
  69.   you to select a string, with the exception of USRobotics and a few
  70.   others.  With Rts/Cts &K3 and \Q3 are very common.  With Xon/Xoff try
  71.   &K4 or \Q4.

  73.   Some modems do not need flow control characters because they set it to
  74.   Rts/Cts automatically when FaxMail switches them to fax mode.

  76.   If you have a USRobotics or compatible, use the above mentioned strings.

  79.   o With some modems, like the Practical Peripherals class 1 and class 2,
  80.     you may have to go to FaxMail Configuration and do a class-over-ride
  81.     to class 1. Most modems do better if they have and use class 2 or
  82.     class 2.0.

  84.   o Usually a modem that supports class 1 or class 2 is not as good as one
  85.     that supports class 1 and class 2.

  111.  Flow Control is dealt with in two places.  The Flow Control part of the
  112.  Initialization Strings sets the modem to either Rts/Cts Xon/Xoff.  The
  113.  [Rts/Cts] and [Xon/Xoff] options in FaxMail SetUp tell FaxMail and
  114.  Windows what Flow Control the modem will be using.  You need to make
  115.  sure they are both in harmony with one another.
  116.  
  117.  In most cases, FaxMail prefers to use Rts/Cts Flow Control.  A few
  118.  modems need Xon/Xoff Flow Control.  Select <Fax>, <SetUp> to load the
  119.  FaxMail SetUp dialog box and experiment with the Flow Controls.  They
  120.  are [Rts/Cts] and [Xon/Xoff].  Most of the Initialization Strings you
  121.  will have to choose from are Rts/Cts.  If you want to modify a Strings
  122.  from Rts/Cts to Xon/Xoff, for example changing AT&K3 (which is the
  123.  Rts/Cts Flow Controls for some modems) to AT&K4 (which is the Xon/Xoff
  124.  for the same modems) you should change FaxMail SetUp options from
  125.  [Rts/Cts] to [Xon/Xoff].  Look in your modem manual under AT commands
  126.  to see what part of the Initialization String is the Flow Control.

  128.  The USRobotics 28,800 baud class 1,2,2.0 uses Xon/Xoff Flow Control
  129.  while running in the Class 2.0 fax mode but uses Rts/Cts in Class 1.

  181.   place in your AUTOEXEC.BAT where they will load, preferably, first.

  191.   now when I try to run ant Windows program that has a print-routine in
  192.   it, I get a message saying:

  197.      1. Did you re-boot after installing FaxMail for
  198.         Windows?  If not, re-boot the computer now.

  205.   If you had a power failure while in Windows or you crashed out of
  206.   Windows while FaxMail for Windows was active, your
  207.   Default-Printer-Driver may have been replaced with the FaxMail for
  208.   Windows Fax-Converter ("Convert to Fax").

  211.   Close the FaxMail for Windows "Control" Program by clicking on the
  212.   <System> button, <QUIT> button.  Load the Windows Control Panel
  213.   (found in "Accessories" Group or "Main" Group), select Printers and
  214.   choose the Printer-Driver that you want as your Default-Printer-Driver.
  215.   Then reload the FaxMail for Windows "Control" Program.

  218.   When you have the FaxMail for Windows Control loaded and the PRINTER OR
  219.   FAX TOGGLE is toggled to FAX, Windows swaps from your Default-Printer-
  220.   Driver to "Convert to Fax".  When you toggle back to PRINTER or exit
  221.   Windows, Windows swaps back to your Default-Printer-Driver.  If you
  222.   crash out of Windows, Windows does not get a chance to swap back, so
  223.   the next time you enter Windows it thinks that "Convert to Fax" is your
  224.   Default-Printer-Driver and when FaxMail for Windows makes it's swap it
  225.   swaps "Convert to Fax" for "Convert to Fax".

  287.   There are several FaxModem sold by USRobotics that are sold under
  288.   the name of USRobotics Sportster 14.4 Class 1.  For that reason
  289.   there are more than one method of solving the problems, depending on
  290.   which one you have.

  293.    a. Use a text editor, such as Windows Notepad or SYSEDIT, to open your
  294.       SYSTEM.INI file.  For Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.11, under [Boot],
  295.       be sure it looks like this.

  300.       There are other high performance Modem drivers that can be used
  301.       such as COMM.DRV=CYBERCOM.DRV.  You can get a high performance

  338.    terminal to the COM-Port where your USRobotics Sportster 14.4

  363.   I am in Windows and I try to print but the FaxMail for Windows
  364.   "FaxMail Convert to Fax" intercepts the print-job and wants to send it
  365.   to a remote Fax-Machine.

  369.   <PRINTER OR FAX TOGGLE> button.

  372.   *If the <PRINTER OR FAX TOGGLE> button has a check by it and it says

  374.   Fax-Machine.  If the <PRINTER OR FAX TOGGLE> button is not checked and
  375.   it says "PRINTER IS ACTIVE" the print-job will be printed on your
  376.   default printer.

  378.   *When you toggle the PRINTER OR FAX TOGGLE, FaxMail for Windows swaps
  379.   the Print-Driver found in your WIN.INI form your normal default to the
  380.   'FaxMail for Windows Convert to Fax(FM_PN_DX.DRV)' Print-Driver.
  381.   So...If the <PRINTER OR FAX TOGGLE> button is set to the Convert to Fax
  382.   ("FAX IS ACTIVE") mode and you re-boot with a (press <Alt+Ctrl+Del>),
  383.   turn the power off-on or power failure, the Convert to
  384.   Fax(FM_PN_DX.DRV) will be left in your WIN.INI file.  As a result,
  385.   toggling the <PRINTER OR FAX TOGGLE> button will switching "back and
  386.   forth" between the Convert to Fax and Convert to Fax Print-Driver and
  387.   your actual default Print-Driver will be lost.

  389.  Solution:
  390.   If/when this happens:
  391.   1. Click on the <System-Button>
  392.   2. Click on the <QUIT> FaxMail for Windows button.
  393.   3. Load the Windows "Control Panel" program.
  394.   4. Load the "Printers" program.
  395.   5. Highlight your normal Printer-Driver.
  396.   6. Click on <Set As Default Printer>.
  397.   7. Click on <Close>.
  398.   8. Load the FaxMail for Windows "Control" program to reload FaxMail for
  399.      Windows back-ground operation again and all will be normal again.

  403.   me if I want to allow the system to write to FM_DS_IN.CFG and the

  464.   file, by itself, with no other text on that line.  When the Send-Fax
  465.   program processes the Cover-Page file, it will use the information on
  466.   that line and then remove that line, so your second line will become
  467.   the first.

  470.   When I want to Fax, I have to go to the <System> button and toggle the
  471.   <PRINTER OR FAX TOGGLE> to FAX and when I want to Print to my default
  472.   Printer, I have to toggle the <PRINTER OR FAX TOGGLE> to PRINTER.  Why
  473.   couldn't that be done automatically?

  476.   Some Windows applications get a HANDLE to the Printer-Device-Context
  477.   upon entry and when you go to print, they use that HANDLE.  If we were
  478.   to suddenly swap from the default Printer-Driver to the
  479.   "Convert to Fax" Driver, the current application would crash when it
  480.   tried to use the obsolete HANDLE.

  483.   FaxMail for Windows does send out a global message to all applications
  484.   every time it swaps from the "Convert to Fax" to your
  485.   "Default-Printer-Driver" or back again, but not all applications pay
  486.   attention to it, so you may have to toggle the <PRINTER OR FAX TOGGLE>
  487.   before loading these applications.
